Songs help students enjoy math!
As a teacher, when I teach math, I always want
my students to engage in the math learning process. In this case, I need to
look for some visual aids to bring students' in the math world. I realize that
it is always successful to use some interesting and funny videos to attract
students' attention and learning interests. In most videos, songs are essential
to make the entire video unforgettable. My students always want to watch the
songs twice, some of them even sing and dance along with the music. At the
moment, they care more about the rhythm and the lyrics and they do not realize
that they are learning. Whenever I mentioned the keyword from the lyrics, they
would like to sing. I think this is the best way of learning and teaching.
Therefore, in this blog, I will talk about some songs which can be useful to
target math curriculum and help students minds-on.
(1) This song is really good for Grade 1s and
Grade2s. The lyric is very informative with all the clear explanations. Though
younger students may not be able to sing the whole song, with the help of the
animation, they can still get the concept of place value-ones, tens and
hundreds. They will learn how to write the number down. Also, younger kids love
all kinds of songs.
(2) This song and animation are great for younger
learners (Grade 3 and 4s)to learn the math concept of money, they can easily
remember the symbol and value of each coin. The melody is brisk and happy. My
students love to sing along with the video. Try this in teaching money, you
will be surprised.
(3)This is a super cool video with all the
raps for junior students like my Grade 6s. They are crazy about it. They have
fun in learning perimeter and area. But sometimes you know they just want to
repeat the lyrics. After they listen to the song, you need to ask them what
they learn from this. Maybe you can use some questions to check what they have
learned. But anyway, this is a cool song.
Will songs only work for elementary math
teaching? NO, EVERYONE LOVES SONGS.
(4) Still remembering SIN or COS, maybe
this song can be helpful in your teaching. Your students would love to review
this over and over again. They may ask you for lyrics so maybe you can have
another activity like a scavenger hunt in lyrics. They will learn trig by
themselves.
(5) If you are asked by your grade 7s: how to find the
roots? And what are they? You can consider playing this song as a minds-on
activity. They can easily learn this important formula without having
difficulties. And they will love it for a long time. I think you can have a
try.
(6)Factoring will be hard for most of the students. I
found a song which is weird, cringe, hard to follow but impressive and helpful.
The melody is from a Korean Song which is popular. Students would love the
melody and they will learn some effective ways to do the factor. Like the
